“Prophet” by Frank Peretti

August 19, 2019

“John Barrett heard God speak when he was ten years old.”

“Prophet,” by Frank Peretti, was an interesting read from the author of the two “Darkness” books I read last year. I found this at a used book store and bought it purely on the name of the author, even though I had never heard of it.

Well, I wasn’t disappointed in the least with the quality of writing and Peretti’s ability to wind up the story like a mystery thriller, while still giving ample time for character development. The story follows John Barrett, the city’s premier news anchor and son to John Barrett, Sr., a plumbing wholesaler and would-be religious nut/prophet. Though there is a pretty strong social/political statement throughout the book (decidedly pro-life), Peretti tries and mostly succeeds in offering balanced viewpoints from his characters to allow for something that doesn’t seem like he’s trying to convince you of something.

It’s always funny to me to read books from a couple decades ago, because it seems like the authors are just as excited by new technology as they are with the story they are telling. For instance, there are a few points in the story where Peretti takes time to explain how email works and multiple cut scenes where he gives moment-by-moment descriptions of TV sequences and what happens behind the scenes in editing rooms.

If you want to grab a copy of the book (link in bio, code “PROPHET”), make sure to drop a comment and tell me your suggestions for mystery/thriller writers. I’ve read a few Grisham books, and a few Peretti books, and I’d like to dive into that genre more!

Also, if you’d like to see my list of favorite fiction books/authors, click the link in my bio and put in the code “FICTION” to be taken to my Amazon list of recommendations.
